The HK MP7

The MP7 is an APDW (Advanced Personal Defense Weapon) machine pistol that aims to bridge the gap between the conventional machine pistol and the assault rifle. PDWs are intended to provide troops not directly employed in combat with a significant response capability. Officers, tank crews or artillery personnel do not need to carry an assault rifle, but must nevertheless be able to cope with an unexpected attack and defeat opponents equipped with flak jackets capable of stopping handgun ammunition. The MP7 was the Heckler & Koch answer to this request. It is the second weapon put into production meeting this requirement, the first being the P90 of FN Herstal. The idea was to propose a light weapon firing small-caliber ammunition with a high muzzle velocity. The MP7 thus fires 4.6x30 ammunition  720 meters/second with a rate of 950 rounds per minute.
